FROM THE PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN TO THE PIRATES OF DESOTO CAVERNS FAMILY FUN PARK ALL KIDS LOVE A PIRATE SHIP

Childersburg, Alabama, April 4, 2012 - Al Mathis, owner of DeSoto Caverns Family Fun Park announced today that the well known "Pirate Ship" will be rebuilt in the park. The original "Pirate Ship" was the first attraction built at the park and shaped many memories for children and families from the early eighties through spring of 2009.

Mathis presented a handmade replica of the ship to President Tim Lacy during his announcement. Mathis devoted over thirty hours to the creation of the model which he built from match sticks at his kitchen table. The decision to bring back the Pirate Ship emanated from the numerous comments of visitors with warm memories of the days of the ship. "Teachers that have been coming to the park year after year ask if we are going to bring the ship back." said Christie Phipps Director of Group Sales. "I am excited to be able to tell them about the new ship."

Mathis also built the model of the original Pirate Ship which he used as a pattern to build the life size ship in1982. Although Mathis designed and built the new replica, he has handed the task of construction over to Johnny Badders, the park's Director of Maintenance. The ship will be built from eight foot landscape timbers with a finished size of approximately 20' x 40' from stem to stern. The ship will be equipped with tire swings, ladders, a walking plank, and serve as a mini playground for kids of all ages. "Several new safety features have been included in the design of the ship." said Lacy. "Building materials will be ordered immediately and construction is scheduled to be begin in mid April." "My children grew up playing on the original ship and they are excited about having the new ship available for their children to enjoy." said Mathis.

Completion of the ship is expected to be late spring. The match stick replica will be on display next to the ship. The ship will be a free attraction and available to all customers, groups and field trips at no cost. Families can enter the park, picnic and spend the day exploring the ship all at no charge. The addition of the ship and two water rollers brings the total of new spring attractions to three and the total of fun and wacky attractions to twenty-eight.

DeSoto Caverns Family Fun Park is a family owned attraction located in Childersburg, Alabama. The park features include the beautiful and historic DeSoto Caverns and over 25 wacky attractions. The park is open year round.
